Blu-Ray formatted movies have an edge over older video formats and it is unlikely that they will go away anytime soon. The reason for this is that millions of videophiles still prefer high-quality video and the state-of-the-art features that Blu-Ray players and disc provide.

Even the best services like Netflix that boasts high-definition transmission actually stream at only 1 mbps, up to 10 mbps at best, and viewed with hdmi cable for advanced use. That is roughly the equivalent of a standard DVD video playing at around 4 to 8 mbps.

On the other hand, a Blu-Ray disc can crank pixel resolutions up to 36 mbps, with image texture so clear that you can almost count the few strands of hair on Gollum’s scalp in Lord of the Rings.

Like DVD’s that have tremendously dropped in sales, Blu-Ray formatted movies are not expected to last forever. Streamed movies will eventually overtake Blu-Ray video discs when 100-mbps internet access becomes a reality.

The closest comparison I could come up with was how many car owners like to customize their automobiles.  It’s a hobby that’s been going on for years, and continues to this day.  I must admit, to not being immune to the whole activity.  I also have a fascination for pretty screen savers, backgrounds and wallpapers.  I love some good eye candy, whether it’s in a computer game, a movie, or just digital images in my photo collection.  That’s usually I guy thing I think, as we seem to be more attracted to visual effects.  Not sure why it is that guys like big explosions better than girls, but I’m sure there’s a perfectly good explanation for it.

In order to watch in 3D we will need 3D equipment. In 2010 new 3D TV sets are emerging. Most require 3D glasses although, some innovative options are on the way. We will also need a 3D movie or access to a 3D cable or satellite channel.

In order to project a 3D image the science of stereopsis is used. This technology will have radio controlled shutter glasses that open and close in sync with flashing images on the 3D TV screen. In order to view images in 3D two images must be projected on the screen at the same time. With the glasses and stereopsis the flashes are in sync with the movie and happen so fast all our eye sees is the illusion of a movie being in 3D.

If you are in a theater you will probably have non-powered Polaroid glasses which allow the eye to view two offset images. A projector will project the two different images onto the screen at the same time. This system is too expensive for home viewing so you will probably use the infrared active shutter glasses for your home 3D TV system.

Obviously you will need a HD3D LEDTV and whatever is required to watch the movie such as the appropriate 3D glasses and a transmitter for the glasses if they are active shutter glasses, which they probably are. You will also need a 3D movie source whether it is a new cable or satellite 3D channel or a 3D blu-ray movie.

Direct TV is offering some 3D options. They have a sampler channel, an on demand channel, and the ever so popular pay per view option. You may need to update your set top box firmware and make sure you have it hooked up with a 3D compatible cable, such as an HDMI 1.4 cable.

Network stations are scrambling to provide 3D channels to meet the consumer demand. ESPN and Discovery both have plans for 3D channels. As well as the big game makers such as Sony. Get those active shutter glasses ready for some real excitement.

If glasses are what you need to try it out Vuzix makes a compatible device that can show 3D from inside the glasses. You just need to hook it up to a 3D source.

A big breakthrough for the home 3D TV market will be 3D TV with no glasses required. Parallax Barrier liquid crystal technology is the most promising option in this arena. The crystal will direct the eye to different images in essence creating a 3D effect.

Now is the time for 3D. In the past 3D movies and shows have been a novelty and only recently have real 3D movie theater experiences actually been realistic. We owe a lot of the advances of 3D technology to the advance of the IMAX theater. They were trailblazers and now you can be a trailblazer in your own home with your own 3D technology.

Now I know that Nicolas Cage can be hit and miss with his movies, but when he’s on he’s awesome.  Plus, The Sorcerers Apprentice is bound to have some cool eye candy in the form of special effects.  That’s always something that works for me with movies.  Now if your in the mood for getting a little spooked, then it’s hard to go wrong with A Nightmare On Elm Street in it’s latest incarnation.  I’m a big The Office fan, an it goes without saying that Steve Carell is a big part of the reason.  So, that means Despicable Me is pretty much mandatory on my must-see movie list.

Or, you could even watch Killers (2010) movie online if that’s more to your liking.  The title sounds a little nasty, but it’s a movie with a lot of comedy in it.  You may want to check it out when you get a chance. Then, once your done with that one, you could watch The A-Team movie online for dessert.  I used to love that TV show so much when I was younger.  Sure it was campy and a bit over the top, but who can’t help but like a movie with Mr T in it?

• Titanic – The first drama that people think of when they are looking for movies on Netflex is Titanic. That wonderful movie where Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet fall in love aboard the doomed ship that sank almost a century ago.

• My Girl – Another great drama that people rent on Netflix is My Girl, a story about the friendship between a boy and a girl. It stars Macaulay Culkin and Anna Chlumsky and is a movie that reduces most viewers to tears. Definitely a must see for anyone who loves a good, wholesome movie drama.

• Patch Adams – This movie is based on the true story of a wonderful doctor who created the Gesundheit Institute. He believed that being a doctor meant more than wearing a white coat and having a stethoscope around their neck. Robin Williams’ performance in this movie is moving and incredible, and this is one that no one should miss.

The three dramas listed above are ones that a lot of people rent when they go to Netflix, and they are also ones that have stood the test of time. Get ready to get the tissues out when you watch them and cuddle up with your husband, because you are going to need some comforting. Dramas are something that a lot of people choose when they are looking for a good movie, because they are something that a lot of people like and most people can agree upon when renting a movie.
