Now Is The Time For 3D
Technology has made some amazing advances lately. When it comes to home appliances and consumer electronics we have access to more than ever before. An old technology that is making great advances is the 3D technology. Now we can watch true 3D at home with 3D TV.
In order to watch in 3D we will need 3D equipment. In 2010 new 3D TV sets are emerging. Most require 3D glasses although, some innovative options are on the way. We will also need a 3D movie or access to a 3D cable or satellite channel.
In order to project a 3D image the science of stereopsis is used. This technology will have radio controlled shutter glasses that open and close in sync with flashing images on the 3D TV screen. In order to view images in 3D two images must be projected on the screen at the same time. With the glasses and stereopsis the flashes are in sync with the movie and happen so fast all our eye sees is the illusion of a movie being in 3D.
If you are in a theater you will probably have non-powered Polaroid glasses which allow the eye to view two offset images. A projector will project the two different images onto the screen at the same time. This system is too expensive for home viewing so you will probably use the infrared active shutter glasses for your home 3D TV system.
Obviously you will need a HD3D LEDTV and whatever is required to watch the movie such as the appropriate 3D glasses and a transmitter for the glasses if they are active shutter glasses, which they probably are. You will also need a 3D movie source whether it is a new cable or satellite 3D channel or a 3D blu-ray movie.
Direct TV is offering some 3D options. They have a sampler channel, an on demand channel, and the ever so popular pay per view option. You may need to update your set top box firmware and make sure you have it hooked up with a 3D compatible cable, such as an HDMI 1.4 cable.
Network stations are scrambling to provide 3D channels to meet the consumer demand. ESPN and Discovery both have plans for 3D channels. As well as the big game makers such as Sony. Get those active shutter glasses ready for some real excitement.

A big breakthrough for the home 3D TV market will be 3D TV with no glasses required. Parallax Barrier liquid crystal technology is the most promising option in this arena. The crystal will direct the eye to different images in essence creating a 3D effect.
Now is the time for 3D. In the past 3D movies and shows have been a novelty and only recently have real 3D movie theater experiences actually been realistic. We owe a lot of the advances of 3D technology to the advance of the IMAX theater. They were trailblazers and now you can be a trailblazer in your own home with your own 3D technology.
